Intro:

Chowmien is a Nepali dish made by stir-frying meat, veggies and special type of noodles. Chowmien (in Mandarin "ch'ao mien" meaning “stir-fried noodles,” originated in Northern China) is actually an authentic Chinese dish. In Nepal, it is believed that Tibetans, who migrated from Tibet, brought the dish with them which then got Nepalified with local spices & ingredients to suit local taste. In the Newari community, water buffalo meat is a popular choice to add in the noodles apart from the veggies like onions, cabbages, tomatoes, beans, green chilies, etc.
You will find lots of varieties of recipes with different methods and styles. The video below is the one inspired by Newari way or preparation however does not contain non-veg. Blog will however try to follow it’s traditional Tibetan style roots.

What’s in it:

    Ingredients
      • Onion                             – 1 Medium (Sliced)
      • Tomatoes                      – 2 Medium(Sliced)
      • Garlic                             – 4 Cloves (Smashed and Chopped)
      • Green Chilies                – 2 to 3 (Medium, Sliced)
      • Coriander Leaves         – A bunch (Chopped)
      • Beans                             – 100 Grams (Sliced)
      • Capsicum                      –  1 Large (Sliced)
      • Carrot                            – 1 Medium (Thinly Sliced)
      • Cabbage                        – 1 Small (Sliced)
      • Meat                              – Around 250 Grams (Boiled, Sliced)
      • Chowmien Noodles      – Around 400 Grams
    Spices
      • Salt
      • Cumin Powder
      • Turmeric Powder
      • Black Pepper
      • Soy Sauce (Dark)
      • Vegetable Stock
      • Hot Sauce

    What to do:

    Firstly, boil the noodle, drain it once done and then oil it so that it would not stick. Heat a frying pan and add oil. Once oil is hot, add some cumin seeds and then add the meat. Cook the meat until the it turns brown. Then, add onions, beans, cabbage and garlic and fry for few minutes. Now add tomatoes, green chilies, capsicum and carrot and fry until veggies are half cooked. When veggies are  done as required, add the spices and sauce and stir fry it until every thing is well done. Once done, plate it and add coriander leaves to garnish and serve it with tomato ketchup.
